Bokashi Grains in Hessian Bag 4kg. A four kilo bag of Bokashi grains to produce a natural, rich soil conditioner and liquid fertiliser. Made in Australia using wheat bran and rice husks that have been sprayed with a group of micro-organisms that exist freely in nature.

Features

This Bokashi mix is dried thoroughly so it can be stored for years with no loss of effectiveness. The dry ingredients in the mix are simply a carrier and food source for the micro-organisms which are dormant when dry in the packaging and activate again when added to your waste.

Bokashi ferments the waste in the bokashi bucket, eliminating unpleasant odours. When the waste is buried in the soil, the mix accelerates the breakdown of the waste and adds life and nutrients to the soil. This mix can also be used as a great compost starter!

How to compost with Bokashi mix:

  1. Place your kitchen waste in the bucket and sprinkle a handful of Bokashi mix over every layer of waste. Use approximately one tablespoon of mix for every cup of waste. Use more Bokashi when adding high protein foods, eg meat, fish, cheese and eggs.
  2. Check that the lid is closed tightly at all times.
  3. Regularly drain the Bokashi juice produced using the tap at the base of the bucket.
  4. Repeat this layering process until the Bokashi One bucket is full.
  5. Once full, the waste is ready to be buried. (Complete breakdown of the waste and the composting process occurs when it is buried in the soil.)
  6. When empty the hessian sack can be repurposed, composted (best cut into smaller pieces and buried when emptying your Bokashi One bucket) or used a mulch (it will help with moisture retention, it can also be used when germinating seeds).
Here's some other interesting info about the Bokashi system.

Is fermenting better than compost?
Compost is a very good source of nutrients for your garden, but because of the composting process, much of the goodness is lost. Fermented waste, however, retains all of the energy (no heat loss) and most of the nutrients in the waste, so that all of this material is available to your plants. Also, fermented waste has the bonus of providing beneficial microbes to your garden, and this will over time produce amazing results.

Is fermenting good for the environment?
Fermenting waste is far better than composting. Greenhouse gas emissions are greatly reduced during fermentation, there are no insect or rodent problems, and the end product is extremely valuable as a soil conditioner and fertiliser. Also, the process retains all the energy (not released to the atmosphere) and all the water is retained and not evaporated.

Bokashi grains should be stored in a cool, dark location and kept airtight.

Brand story

The Bokashi buckets are made utilising some recycled plastic and help eliminate food waste from your home. Invented in Japan, this all-food recycling system uses effective microbes or bokashi" — a Japanese word meaning "fermented organic matter" — to decompose the matter.

A bokashi compost system is one of the easiest ways to direct food waste away from landfill and instead create valuable soil conditioner and fertiliser for your garden.

It utilises Effective Micro-organisms, which are introduced as part of either a grain mix or liquid spray, to ferment food waste. Bokashi is a unique composting system as almost all your food waste — even dairy, meat and fish — can be easily fermented in your kitchen.

Bokashi compost systems are small enough to fit in your kitchen or in another convenient area in your home. It doesn’t smell, doesn’t attract insects, is easy to use and will help you reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill.

What is the difference between various Bokashi brands?

Biome stocks the popular and high performing Bokashi One and Urban Composter brands. The bins for these two bokashi systems function the same but are different shapes and have different lid types, and Bokashi One uses grains and Urban Composter uses a liquid spray.  Both grains and spray contain the effective microorganisms. We go into detail about this as well as answer all of your frequent bokashi questions in this blog post here >

    Hessian - hooray!

Bokashi is Bokashi- I use it in our composting toilet as per instructions from the retailer/manufacturer, but i give 5 stars to Biome for avoiding plastic bags and using a hessian bag instead. I wish more companies did this. Congratulations!

    We love our Bokashi!

We love our Bokashi One System. We currently use to bins - one being filled and one fermenting. The 4kg grains bag means less trips to the store to refill!

    Great Value

Great bulk quantity, biodegradable bag, value for money. My plants are jumping out of the ground since applying Bokashi "juice". I wish I'd known about Bokashi 20 years ago. I've reduced my use of store bought fertiliser by about 80%. Thanks Boime for introducing me to Bokashi! And thanks for your wonderful customer service. Shame it's only available online and not instore also.
