Bokashi compost bin - tan & green (bin only). Revolutionise the way you think about composting. Using an organic fermentation process, the Bokashi Bin recycles all your domestic kitchen waste into valuable soil conditioner. 20L capacity. Note: Price is for the bin only.

Features

Revolutionise the way you think about composting. Using an organic fermentation process, the Bokashi Bin recycles all your domestic kitchen waste into valuable soil conditioner.

Dispose of all your waste in your kitchen, with no smell, no trip to the compost heap and no work to turn the heap. Dispose of all your waste – even dairy and fish – right in your kitchen, with no smell or trip to the compost heap. Revolutionise how you think about composting...

Invented in Japan, this all-food recycling system uses effective microbes or "bokashi" — a Japanese word meaning "fermented organic matter" — to decompose the matter. The fermentation process does not produce smells, so you can keep the bucket under your sink or in your home.

How it works:
Every time you add waste to the Bokashi bucket, you sprinkle a small amount of bokashi onto the waste (the bokashi is a fine grain like mixture). Once the container is filled to capacity (about 3 to 4 weeks for the average household), you can immediately shallow bury the fermented waste in your garden, planter or outdoor compost.
Or, you can let the waste continue to ferment for two weeks in another airtight container (such as a plastic bag or bucket with lid) and then transfer the matter into your garden. The extra fermentation means the material will break down faster in the soil.

In 2 or 3 weeks, the waste you have buried will have broken down into soil (humus) and will be rich with nutrients, microbes and enzymes, all naturally produced.

As the Bokashi bin fills, you also drain off a liquid that can be used diluted as a fertilizer or undiluted in septic tank systems and plumbing drains (the microbes help to break down waste in the system). You can even just tip it down your sink to help keep your drains clean.

It will fit in the cupboard under some sinks, depending on your space of course.

5L and 1.5L bokashi refill bags are available. You can also read more about why fermentation is better than composting under the details of the 5L Bokashi refill.

For those living in apartments, you could pass the fermented waste on to a grateful community garden, friends, relatives or the apartment gardener.

Brand story

The Bokashi buckets are made utilising some recycled plastic and help eliminate food waste from your home. Invented in Japan, this all-food recycling system uses effective microbes or bokashi" — a Japanese word meaning "fermented organic matter" — to decompose the matter.

A bokashi compost system is one of the easiest ways to direct food waste away from landfill and instead create valuable soil conditioner and fertiliser for your garden.

It utilises Effective Micro-organisms, which are introduced as part of either a grain mix or liquid spray, to ferment food waste. Bokashi is a unique composting system as almost all your food waste — even dairy, meat and fish — can be easily fermented in your kitchen.

Bokashi compost systems are small enough to fit in your kitchen or in another convenient area in your home. It doesn’t smell, doesn’t attract insects, is easy to use and will help you reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill.

What is the difference between various Bokashi brands?

Biome stocks the popular and high performing Bokashi One and Urban Composter brands. The bins for these two bokashi systems function the same but are different shapes and have different lid types, and Bokashi One uses grains and Urban Composter uses a liquid spray.  Both grains and spray contain the effective microorganisms. We go into detail about this as well as answer all of your frequent bokashi questions in this blog post here >

    Great waste solution

I live in an apartment and was sick of all the scraps going into the bin. I have a balcony garden, so thought this would be a good solution. First bin in filling up fast and giving me some run off to fertilise my plants with. There's no smell and it breaks down the scraps quickly. I now feel like I can do a small bit for the environment thanks to this system. 🌻

    Bokashi is awesome

The bin set is great, I am so glad I got the two so I can continually get the juices for my plants. Last weekend I emptied the first one into my garden bed I have yet to mix it through and wait a couple weeks to plant something in it. Have been using it for about 6weeks now, my cherry tomatoes, pumpkin and pansies are thriving. A bit like a worm farm without the worm. Love the fact that it has a tight fixing lid so you can't smell it unless you open it or when you drain it.

    Bokashi compost bin

I am so happy with this composting system. Easy and clean to use. My brother recommended it and I was a little sceptical but so glad I decided to give it a try. The juice is fantastic and all my plants are noticeably looking greener and healthier. All my plants love it and are thriving. Much quicker way to make compost than the traditional compost heap and having the juice on tap to fertilise plants with is a real bonus.

    Fantastic service and quick delivery.

    Thank you so much
