  • Garden organically and replace chemical fertilisers with worm castings & worm juice to feed your plants & soil.
  • Small Australian business.

  • Smaller size farm is great for home and apartment use, at the office and for getting the kids involved!
  • Castle-esque cover/lid that the whole family can enjoy.
  • Spigot for easy draining of worm juices.
  • Tested for weight bearing; strong and sturdy.

use:

Worm farming is an excellent, fun & easy way to reduce your household, school or business waste. The castings and worm juice (tea) produced as a result will work wonders in your garden - converts have proclaimed that there is no better liquid fertiliser or soil conditioner than that produced by the humble earthworm.

Comes with plastic base and legs, lid and 3 stacking trays. Tap, coir bedding and instruction sheet included. Although the lighter colour helps keep the temperature stable, place the farm somewhere that avoids the afternoon sun. They can be set up on a balcony or in a laundry for apartment dwellers, under an awning outside, in a shed or in a shaded location for those with a yard. One working tray will added at a time, until you've reached full operation.

Worms love a variety of organic waste such as: kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, paper, cardboard, teabags, dairy, eggs, eggshells, grass clippings, garden waste, vacuum cleaner dust, hair & much more.

The following food waste should be excluded from your worms diet: All citrus which is too acidic, especially pineapple which can be toxic for worms, plant seeds, cooking oil, meat, fish, dairy products, onion family plants and other acidic foods such as tomatoes. The amount of food your worms can eat will increase over time - start with small amounts and build up as your worm population grows.

worms:

Live compost worms can be purchased through a variety of channels; support local businesses in your area by purchasing direct. Worms can often be shipped via Express post in packs of 1000 or more. 1000 is recommended for initial setup.

We love: Worms Downunder, QLD; Kookaburra Worm Farms, QLD; and Worm Tech, NSW. Worms can often be purchased at gardening centres and local organic centres such as Northey Street in Brisbane.

end of life:

Packaging can be recycled. Cleaned farms can be recycled at end of useful life.

    Flimsy

The worm farm is incredibly flimsy and was in no way worth the money spent. The gaps in its assembly has attracted flies and other bugs causing far more problems than it’s worth

    Dried out

We have constructed as instructions but there is too much air flow it completely dried out and no worm juice runoff.

    Hi Marlene,

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that you haven't had success with your worm farm so far.

The Worm Castle does have good aeration which is important for ensuring an aerobic composting environment, producing high quality soil microbes.

Moisture levels in the Worm Castle are controlled by the user who can decide to add more moisture if the farm is too dry or less moisture and more carbon (e.g., coconut coir, autumn leaves etc) if it's too wet.

If you over water a worm farm it will produce worm juice, which is stored in the liquid tray and comes out of the tap. This is a less valuable product than worm extracts or teas which are made directly from the worm castings. This is because the juice or leachate can contain pathogens from rotting vegetables in the worm farm, which is not necessarily ideal to put on your plants.

If you're feeding scraps to your worm farm we would instead recommend making worm extract.

To make worm extract, simply add rain water or dechlorinated water to castings from the worm farm and make it into a slurry which you can dilute and put on your plants.

If you do wish to make worm juice we would recommend pre-composting your scraps first in order to kill any pathogens. Simply mist the top of the castings, producing a small amount of juice in the liquid tray which can then be diluted for your plants.

    Worm Castle

We bought one of these for our grandson's birthday, but in hindsight should have purchased one like our own from Bunnings. The trays do not fit neatly on top of each other, lots of gaps, and the legs are too short to be able to put a bucket under the tap. The idea to make one for kids in a castle design is good, but the difficulty of use may put them off being dedicated worm farmers I'm afraid. Also quite expensive for what they are.
