Top recipes for seasonal eating!

In my last Biome blog post, I wrote about the benefits of seasonal eating and how this can help reduce your carbon footprint as well as super charge your health by accessing local and fresh nutrient dense produce. If you missed it there's a link at the end of this story to catch up. If you would like to learn how you can join the Biome Blog family, go to the Green Living Guide and contact Tracey directly.

In this post I'd love to share two recipes I've personally created which my family are absolutely loving right now. - Paw paw, coconut and lime breakfast medley - Mango, strawberry and yoghurt icy poles Right now in Perth we have access to beautifully juicy and fresh mangoes from the north of WA. We are lucky enough to have found a great contact and are able to buy the mangoes direct from the farmers. If you keep your eyes and ears open and ask around, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to find these kind of connections, especially with the widespread access of social media. I love the feeling of knowing I'm supporting farmers direct as it sits within my personal ethics and life philosophy. Another fresh fruity ingredient which features in my second recipe is strawberries. Every year my husband and I love to go for a drive out to the strawberry farm in Bullsbrook and pick fresh strawberries together with our children. We love the way it connects our children to their food, and we find they are much more excited to eat the food they have picked and prepared themselves. Just today my children helped me with this recipe which I'm excited to share with you. They reminisced about the visit we made to the strawberry farm and, as we made the icy poles, we talked about how healthy they would make us feel.

I hope you enjoy these recipes!

Jen's Paw Paw, Coconut and Lime Breakfast Medley

One day at my local fresh market Paw Paw was on special. I have heard of it being good for your skin so I bought some, along with a coconut - a fruit that brings back memories from my time spent in Thailand. I find coconut water is also great for satisfying a craving for something sweet. So I came home and whipped up this little treat and we have been loving it ever since!

Ingredients Fresh Paw Paw/Papaya Fresh Blueberries Juice of one lime 1 x whole drinking coconut Optional Coconut flakes (unsweetened) Maple Syrup Method

  1. Chop open your coconut and drain out the water. I like to drink it while I'm preparing this dish. Scoop out the flesh and chop it into bite sized strips
  2. Chop up the paw paw into bite sized pieces
  3. Spread the paw paw and coconut flesh on a plate or in a bowl
  4. Sprinkle over the fresh blueberries
  5. Drizzle some fresh lime juice on top
  6. Scatter some coconut flakes on top (and some maple syrup if you need a bit of extra sweetness) and voila! A super fresh dish is ready to nourish your body.

Jen's Mango, Strawberry and Yoghurt Icy-poles

I absolutely love making icy-poles from scratch. It's super easy and makes the perfect summer snack for children. It's also easy to allow children to help. I give my children a bowl of the mixture each and they spoon it into the moulds, then the reward is they get to eat any leftover that doesn't fit in. I always make sure they get a nice bowl full and they are really happy. Ingredients 5 frozen bananas 2 fresh mangoes 10 frozen strawberries 1 cup of greek yoghurt Method
  1. Put all the items into a high speed blender. I like to use my thermomix.
  2. Pulse a few times, then blend. Stop every 5-10 seconds to scrape down the sides, and then blend some more. Keep an eye on texture.
  3. Once everything is blended up to your desired consistency it's time to put into moulds. Biome have a fantastic range of moulds here.
  4. Put into moulds and freeze.
Do you love using seasonal ingredients? What fresh foods are you loving right now? Did you try my recipes? What did you think? I'd love to know your thoughts. Please feel free to share in the comments section. Yours in great health, Jen PS: The photos in this article are all taken by my husband Dean Donovan who is going under the name of deanography
