How does water affect your health?

Many people realise that the quality of their drinking water may not be ideal but have you ever considered what is in your water and that it might actually be making you sick?

Chlorine in your water

Chlorine is added to public water supplies to kill the disease-causing bacteria that water or its transport pipes might contain. Chlorine's highly efficient disinfectant qualities have allowed communities and whole cities to grow and prosper by providing disease-free tap water to homes and industry for over a century. But all this disinfecting has not come without a price: Chlorine introduced into the water supply reacts with other naturally-occurring elements to form toxins called trihalomethanes (THMs), which eventually make their way into our bodies. Dr. Peter Montague of the Environmental Research Foundation says "THMs have been linked to a wide range of human health maladies ranging from asthma and eczema to bladder cancer and heart disease. Alternatives to chlorination for water treatment do exist at this time, several European and Canadian cities now disinfect their water supplies with ozone instead of chlorine. But eliminating water pollution and cleaning up our watersheds is not going to happen overnight. The other options to eliminating chlorine from our water are first and foremost filtration at the faucet. Carbon-based filters are considered the most effective at removing THMs and other toxins". Another easy solution that just takes a little patience is simply leaving a jug of tap water uncovered in the refrigerator, chlorine and related compounds will make their way out of tap water if the container is simply left uncovered in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Fluoride

Fluoridation is controversial issue in which it's difficult to separate fact from fiction. Dr Martin Fox states, "fluoride toxicity has been linked to genetic damage in plants and animals, plus a series of allergic reactions ranging from fatigue, headaches, urinary tract irritations, diarrhea and many other problems in humans". On the contrary, many dentists state that fluoridation is the most efficient way of preventing tooth decay and illness, preventing lost school and work hours and public health spending. Our ceramic water purifiers offer a stylish Fluoride reduction water filter of exceptional quality that filters out up to 99.99% of impurities in addition to removing up to 99.75% fluoride. Acidity in the Body

Most tap water is acidic and so is most commercially sold bottled water. The pH of drinking water varies from area to area, depending on the mineral concentrations, and other additives used in the processing of the water system (chlorine, fluoride, etc are major causes of acidity in the body). The human body also creates acid, all day, every day, as a by-product of metabolism. In addition, acid is introduced into the system through eating and digestion. Many secreted and digested acids are swept away by the blood stream, filtered out by the kidneys, and released from the body in the urine. Other acids leave the body through perspiration. However, your body can only process a certain amount of acids so it is possible to overload the system and for the body to become acidic. Source: - Alkaway

Bathing can also be a chemical war zone

Preliminary research suggests that the ingestion of harmful chemicals from drinking water may not be the primary exposure. Skin absorption rates for toxic chemicals in both children and adults are much higher than from oral ingestion for toluene, ethyl benzene, and styrene. Inhalation during showering of TCE (trichloroethylene) was 6 to 80 times greater than from drinking the water. One solution to consider is a chlorine shower filter for bathing and showering. Water filter bottles

Filling your water bottles up at home has become a way of life these days and what better way to fill up your reusable water bottle, than with clean tasting filtered water from a ceramic counter top water purifier. Reusable bottles that have a built in filter are also becoming very popular. There are several different water filter bottles available to choose from. The eau good - charcoal filter water bottle uses a 100% natural Binchotan active charcoal stick that has been used in Japan since the 17 century as a water purifier. It mineralises tap water while reducing the pH and presence of chlorine. A better choice if you are travelling in an undeveloped country is the compact Fill2Pure BPA free sports filter bottle or the OKO filter bottle are also good choices that will prevent most water borne illnesses when travelling. You can actually fill the bottle from a tap or a muddy creek and instantly drink pure, safe, clean water. When travelling, camping, backpacking or hiking, if you won't have access to safe drinking water for several days at a time, you can now drink safe on or off the grid with the SteriPEN® Adventurer Opti water purifier which uses a revolutionary optical eye to sense the water while UV light removes all doubt of purification and indicates when your water has been completely purified. The patent-pending technology ensures safe use and provides purification in even the coldest of waters.
