One of the main considerations when choosing a travel cutlery set is the material it is made from. We stock a variety of options at Biome, each with their own pros and cons. Read on to learn about some of the advantages of various materials.
Wood or Bamboo:
Wooden cutlery is made from one of the most renewable resources we have. While we should be aiming to preserve tree cover, it is not too difficult to sustainably use wood as a resource. Additionally, at the end of their life, wooden products will break down much more quickly than most other materials. Wooden travel cutlery sets are light, durable, very sustainable and will not conduct heat like some other materials. Perfect for hot meals! The main drawback of wooden cutlery sets is that some foods, like curries, rich pasta sauces or soups may leech into the wood grain and leave some discolouration. While washing the cutlery will sanitise it and render it 'clean', the discolouration can be unsightly and a turn off for some people.
Stainless Steel:
Stainless steel cutlery sets are even more durable than their wooden counterparts, but typically heavier. At the end of their life, they can be recycled into another product, meaning that practically no new resources need to be used. While they are heavier, the total weight is still insignificant, so you will barely notice their addition to your purse or bag. Stainless steel is also great at (you guessed it) resisting stains. Given that stainless steel is impervious to water, there is nowhere for stains to go! Simply wipe your cutlery set down with soapy water after use and watch any residue disappear! Stainless steel does conduct heat, so be careful if you have had your stainless cutlery sitting in hot food for a while... it may burn your lips!
Bio-Composite Plastic:
Light My Fire make sporks and some other products from a proprietary Bio-Composite Plastic. This is a great material for a few reasons. Firstly, the bio-composite is derived from a variety of organic materials. They use sugarcane, wood fibre wastage and GMO free corn as their virgin materials. Any non-organic materials are recycled. Secondly, their Bioplastic is very strong while still being extremely lightweight. This leaves their cutlery sets excellent for travellers or hikers, as they won't weigh down your bag OR break in transit. Bioplastic cutlery is a great option for uni, work, school, travelling or hiking.
Titanium:
The last material we offer for cutlery sets is Titanium. Once again from Light My Fire, Titanium cutlery is the strongest material we offer here at Biome. If you are looking for a travel cutlery set that you know will not break, bend or get damaged in your bag, Titanium is the option for you. It is much lighter & stronger than stainless steel, and just as easy to clean. Additionally, it does not hold heat like stainless steel, so you will be less likely to burn yourself. The only real downside of Titanium cutlery is the price, but if you consider the expected lifetime of these products the price becomes more justifiable.
